Webtips from Our Friends

Hide Your IP Address from Hackers

If you spend time in chat rooms or send messages via ICQ, Instant Messenger, etc. - then you may want to check and see if you could be giving away the IP address of your PC to hackers.

You can hide your IP address from others by turning off file sharing. In Windows 95/98...

1) Click the Start button
2) Click Settings
3) Click on the Control Panel
4) Click on Network
5) On the Configuration tab, click the File and Print Sharing button
6) In the next window turn off access to both items

It may even speed up your computer in some areas. Of course, if your computer is part of an office network you probably won't be able to turn off file sharing, but you can check with your network administrator to be sure.
