Friendship Bag

<< Back to Index

Contributed by Caree

I recently attended an overnight retreat which focused on drawing people together who weren't yet well-acquainted. They provided everyone with a little gift which I thought could be a great project for future retreats, or for people to make for their friends. It was called a FRIENDSHIP BAG. I'm sure there are many varieties, but this is the kind I received.

The retreat coordinators sewed together the bags on their sewing machines.

What to use:

  • Cotton Print material 12 " in length by 3 1/2 " wide.
  • Lengthwise, the material was sewn wrong side out on three sides, leaving a large opening at the top.
(I think I would cut across the top with craft scissors or pinking sheers)
  • Corded golden thread about 16 in long
  • 1 Band-Aid
  • 1 kleenex
  • 1 peppermint candy
  • 1 life savor
  • 1 small rubber band
  • 1 toothpick
  • 1 button
  • 1 hole punch
  • White Paper

On a piece of paper go half way down the paper and make two columns

In the left column type
A RUBBER BAND:
To remind you of hugging and those times when you need to give or receive one.
(Find a scriptural reference about God's love)
A MINT:
To remind you that you are worth more than a mint to your family, friends, and God.
(Find a scriptural reference how much God cares)
A TISSUE:
To remind you to dry someone's tears (or perhaps your own), so you can see the tears of others.
(Find a scriptural reference representing God and how HE sees your tears)
A TOOTHPICK:
To remind you to "pick out" the good qualities in everyone.
(Find a scriptural reference to character)

In the right column type
A BAND-AID:
To remind you of healing hurt feelings, yours or someone else's
(Find a scriptural reference on the cross)
A LIFESAVER:
To remind you to think of JESUS as your "life saver."
(Find a scriptural reference on the resurrection)
A BUTTON:
To remind you to "button your lips" to keep from saying things about others.
(Find a scriptural reference on our tongue)
A GOLD THREAD:
To remind you that friendship is the Golden Thread that ties together the hearts of everyone.
(Find a scriptural reference on friends)

Fold the paper in half and with craft scissors cut on three sides (left, right, and bottom) so that it is now approximately 4 in x 8 in.

Along the top side cut in about 2 1/2 in on each side with your craft scissors (leaving the top middle connected approx 2 in.

Fold in half again (as with a card) 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 then punch 1 hole in top inside corner.

Put any kind of design on the front of your card with the words "Friendship Bag" and "Little Reminders for Keeping Special Friendships"

Be creative. Ideas can be picked from various computer programs or you can draw your own.

Stuff your bag with all the goodies. Fold the golden thread in half and pull through hole in corner of card. Tie your bag together to hold everything inside.

Voila!
