Our Seaside Memories

<< Back to Index

We enjoy traveling to the coast during our retreats, and one of our themes was, "Memories are Made of This." Our studies focused on memories as we looked at Joseph's dreams and his life (past, present, future), and the importance of our memorizing God's Word in relation to the past, present, and future.

The shells were to remind us of the past, being at the seashore was our thought for the present, and making a memory of it was to remind us in the future of what we learned.

When we put together our craft for the weekend, our coordinator (to save time) collected several pieces of stray driftwood (something that each person could do on her own during a few moments of reflection), and gobs of shells of various shapes and sizes (which can be purchased at many craft stores). Then we set out to do our craft. Each piece of driftwood had pre-bored holes ready for use.

We needed the following:

  1. Fishing line
  2. Scissors
  3. Various sizes and shapes of shells, enough to cover the needs of your group (some folks use several, while others may require one pretty shell per line)
  4. Marking pens (optional)

The following are the instructions we used. Feel free to make use of them at one of your functions.

  1. Tie a piece of fishing line to as many shells as there are holes in your driftwood, or knot on different layers of shells vertically on your lines. Be as creative as you would like, layering or placing them one shell to each line.

  2. Slip the end of the fishing line through your pre-bored holes in the driftwood you selected.

  3. Adjust the length of your lines to make a pleasing display and tie a strong knot in each line.

  4. Through the end holes on the driftwood, add a line to hang your lovely creation.

  5. With a marking pen (in your choice of colors) jot down the reference to the "theme" scripture or a portion of your favorite memory verse.

Our Theme Scripture:
"The Grass Withereth, The Flower Fadeth: But the Word of our God Shall Stand Forever"
Isaiah 40:8
