Read the accounts of Bathsheba in the following Old Testament book.
2 Samuel 11:1-7, 26, 27
Her Ministry: To stand beside, honor, and submit graciously to her husband
Her Home Life: Raised in a God fearing family with high moral principles. Later, as David's wife, the mother of five sons, one of which was Solomon ("beloved of the Lord").
Her Status: Wife of an excellent officer (Uriah) first, who served dutifully and conscientiously in King David's Army. Because of her husband Uriah's station, he was often away from home during times of war.
Her Character: Careless, negligent, lonely, and lacked self-control. "Her absence of God-given perception - equal to her sin of adultery - caused her sin" Gien Karssen
Her Physical Attributes: Beautiful enough to seize the lusty attentions of an idle King David
Her Ultimate Purpose: To go down in history as the wife of the greatest king of Israel, with a son (Solomon) who became the king full of wisdom of riches. Bathsheba would also appear in the ancestry of Jesus Christ.
Meaning of her name: "Daughter of an Oath" (Dr. Herbert Lockler)
Of Special Note: Because of David and Bathsheba's sin, death came to at least five people:
- Her courageous soldier husband Uriah
- Their baby (within one week of birth as divine judgment for her and King David's dark sin)
- Three of David's sons - Adonijah, Absalom, Ammon
David was --
- disgraced by one son
2 Samuel 13:3
- banished by another son
2 Samuel 15:19
- revolted against by the third son in
1 Kings 2
Special Facts:
David confessed his sin to get right before God. After David confessed, he was freed from his burden of adulterous sin. He got back into fellowship with the Lord and his life gained new dimension. Although Bathsheba's feelings are not mentioned, it is safe to suppose she shared in the King's sense of guilt and sought God's forgiveness receiving it, as well.
