Backdrop:
Martha was sister of Mary and Lazarus who lived in a village names Bethany. Lazarus was sick. The sisters therefore sent a message to Jesus Christ saying “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.” Jesus loved Martha, her sister Mary and their brother Lazarus. Jesus stayed at the same place for two days where He received the message about the sickness of Lazarus. Then He said to His disciples “Let’s go into Judea again.” The disciples tried to stop Him from going to Judea by telling Him what had happened in the past. They said “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?” Jesus gave them an example to explain and said “Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.” Actually Jesus talked about his (Lazarus) death, but the disciples did not understand same as they did not understand when Jesus talked about His own death and resurrection talking to them “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met Him, but Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus "Lord if you would have been here my brother wouldn’t have died. Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered and said, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
