Zipporah
Continued from Page 2

Note:
God struck Moses with a mortal disease because of his rebellion (in compromising with his wife), and Zipporah finally yielded to him regarding the circumcision. Moses, however, was too ill to take a knife and complete the job himself, so Zipporah cut the boy’s foreskin and threw it down before her husband in disgust. She finished by saying, "Surely a bloody husband art thou to me!"

Moses’ health was eventually restored, but the situation in his home never improved. He left without his wife. We don’t read of divorce here, but we do discover that Moses removed himself from an unhealthy situation as a lesson to us that there are times when we too must remove ourselves from situations that hold us back from being freely used by God.

Reference:
When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;

Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land: And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh: And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
Exodus 18:1-6 KJV

Note:
Moses had become a mighty leader and lawgiver in Israel, and eventually his father-in-law, Jethro, came out of the wilderness to visit him. Although Zipporah and the boys came along, and Moses received them all graciously, no more word of Zipporah is mentioned even though she is the mother of his children. She leaves no spiritual legacy for us to follow.

  • We don’t know what kept her going day by day
We know that our hope is in Christ who keeps us going each day
  • We have no example of her taking the time to pray or fast
How do we begin or end our days?
  • We have no evidence of her faith in anything
The Bible tells us in Hebrews, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen" Faith is our lifeline to God
  • She didn’t take well to the counsel of her husband
The Bible tells us to submit to our husbands and honor our husbands.
  • We know that being a Midianite she didn’t believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
The Bible tells us to love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, and your mind!
